Inmates to make, sell hollow blocks

BY FELIPE V. CELINO

ROXAS City — About 30 inmates from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Brgy. San Jose here will become much more useful individuals while waiting for the resolution of cases filed against them.

The city government, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), has allotted P200,000 to assist the inmates in their “livelihood” — making hollow blocks.

The amount was used to purchase a hollow block-making machine and other materials.

“We will not give them fish but will teach them how to fish so (they) would not only build their self-esteem but will also develop the right attitude to sweat out for a living to survive,” said Mayor Angel Alan Celino.

The city government will purchase the hollow blocks that will be produced by the inmates for the city’s engineering and construction projects, such as the daycare centers and other infrastructures.

Earlier, Celino gave assistance to handicapped persons currently under the custody of the CSWDO, who are now producing the “best” bread in their bakery.

The city government bought the breads for its feeding program in the different barangays in this city./PN
