By FELIPE CELINO
ROXAS City – Two suspected members of a notorious holdup group operating in central Panay Island were killed in an encounter with policemen in Brgy. Tina, Dumarao, Capiz.
Insp. Ness Vargas, Dumarao police chief, identified the suspects as Heron Lope and cousin Jeno Lope, both residents of Brgy. Tina.
The two were alleged members of the Totong Magno holdup group operating in Capiz province and parts of Iloilo province.
The hand grenade that the two were supposed to hurl at pursuing policemen killed them. It exploded prematurely, investigators said.
The Dumarao police plotted to arrest the two after getting information on their whereabouts on Friday. Three teams were formed.
Vargas said he also sought an augmentation force from the Provincial Public Safety Management Company led by Supt. Arnold Ardiente.
According to Vargas, the Lopes resisted arrest.
There was an exchange of gunfire.
Vargas said it lasted for some 20 minutes, then the suspects retreated to the mountainous area of Brgy. Tina.
Then the pursuing cops heard a loud explosion.
Recovered from the scene of the firefight were an improvised shotgun, an M-203 rifle, several handguns and ammunitions.
Vargas said the bodies of the suspects were brought to a funeral home in Dumarao town./PN
