ROXAS City — A village chief in Pontevedra, Capiz was shot by a man inside their barangay hall on Wednesday.

However, Manapao Barangay Captain Manuel Arcenas managed to retaliate, shooting his alleged assailant Georvin Balasa, PO3 Romeo Dadivas said.

According to Arcenas, 45-year-old Balasa is a fisherman resident of their barangay.

Dadivas said Balasa who entered the barangay hall drunk shot Arcenas, 57, using a 12-gauge shotgun, hitting the latter on the left side of his body.

Arcenas later shot Balasa using his .45-caliber pistol, hitting him on the abdomen, police said.

Balasa was rushed to the nearby Bailan District Hospital in Pontevedra town.

He was later transferred to the Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital in this city for further medical attention.

On the other hand, the wife of Balasa denied that her husband owns a firearm, and that he shot Arcenas.

She also publicly appealed for financial help for having insufficient money to shoulder Balasa’s surgery, police said.

Arcenas was brought by his relatives to the Capiz Emmanuel Hospital.

He surrendered his firearm together with two magazines and seven live ammunitions to the police.

Police recovered from the crime scene empty shells of .45-caliber pistol ammunition.

They have yet to determine the motive behind the incident, but they suspect old grudges and drunkenness may have pushed Balasa to shoot Arcenas./PN
