5,762 evacuated In Caraga flash floods, landslide affecting 300 villages; 2 dead, 1 missing

      BUTUAN CITY (PNA) - With forced evacuation implemented by Surigao City and Surigao del Norte Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils, some 4,762 individuals or about 856 families were evacuated to safer grounds in the City of Surigao, Mainit, Tubod, Claver and Gigaquit towns, report from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Caraga Region here said.

 

          In Dinagat Islands province also in Caraga Region, some 1,000 individuals were evacuated to safer grounds from five affected barangays of the island province due flash floods and landslides.

 

           Already two persons were killed due drowning in Agusan del Norte and one was missing in Surigao del Norte so far were reported to the police and the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD). 

 

          Landslides also occurred in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur and some hinterland barangays of said river town.

 

In Surigao City, PNP, BFP, 30th IB Philippine Army, PNP Recruits, Surigao City Quick Action Response Team (QART) and members of Barangay Council of Washington conducted forced evacuation to 354 families of Sitio Pagasa and Sitio Bonotan of Brgy. Washington and brought to different evacuation centers.

 

Surigao City is chartered city of Surigao del Norte.

 

Water supply was cut off by Surigao City Metropolitan Water District yesterday afternoon at about 4 p.m. due to water turbidity in the watershed area. 

 

In lakeside Mainit, Surigao del Norte, some 2,892 individuals or about 482 families were evacuated in Mainit Municipal Gym; DA Training Center; Quezon Elementary School; Baptist Church; Tagbuyawan Elementary School; Tapian Brgy. Hall; and Mansayao Barangay Hal due to flash floods and rising of fresh water level of the Mainit lake.

 

The lake is the fourth largest in the country.

 

In the entire Surigao del Norte province, some 103,121 individuals or about 20,137 families in 235 barangays out of the total 20 municipalities have been affected by flooding.

 

In Surigao del Sur, landslide occurred at the national highway in Barangay. Union, Municipality of Lingig. Tago River in Tago town has already overflowed into the national highway.

 

In Dinagat Islands, alert Level 3 was raised.  Classes in all levels are also suspended.  Evacuations were also done in Barangays. Jacquez, Wilson, Don Ruben, Luna and Matingbe. 

 

Sea travels to Surigao City to and from Dinagat Islands were also suspended. (PNA/Ben Serrano)
