Caraga Peace task force ambushed by NPA rebels in Butuan City; 1 seriously wounded

            BUTUAN CITY (PNA) - Third Peace and Development team belonging to Task Force Community Operations for Peace and Development (COPD) headed by Lt. Lumague Opcon of the 26th IB Philippine Army of the 402nd Brigade were ambushed by suspected New People’s Army rebels while on their way Barangay Pianing, Butuan City Tuesday afternoon.

 

            The 26th IB based in Agusan del Sur but holds area jurisdiction of some hinterland areas in Butuan City in the report to the Philippine Information Agency Caraga and PNP regional offices claimed that about 2:30 p.m. yesterday Tuesday some eight heavily armed suspected NPA rebels ambushed the government troopers  while on their way to hinterland barangay of Pianing to conduct peace and development programs

 

            The soldiers fought back and firefight ensued which resulted to one soldier wounded and undetermined number wounded in the suspected NPA rebels’ side, report said. 


            Said report added bloodstains were found along escape of the ambushing NPA rebels which lead to the suspicion that undetermined number may have been wounded or died in the gunfight between government troopers and NPA rebels.


            Caraga Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal has called on immediate investigation of the incident claiming Barangay Pianing is village near Butuan City, a highly urbanized city and regional government center and capital of Caraga region.


             Wounded soldier was immediately brought to Butuan City Medical Center for medical treatment. The identity has yet to be announce because the closest kin of the wounded soldier was never informed yet, police said.  (PNA/Ben Serrano)
