BUTUAN CITY (PNA) - A lady Mamanwa tribal leader survived an assassination attempt perpetuated by armed suspects who shot her while walking towards Barangay Taganito proper in Taganito Mining area along provincial road in Barangay Taganito, Claver, Surigao del Norte Thursday morning.

Caraga Police Regional Information office report identified the victim as Evangeline “Vangie” Bago Porogoy, daughter of Mamanwa Tribal Chieftain Toto Bago

The victim is currently Board of Director of Taganito Indigenous People’s Management Development.

Initial police investigation result showed Porogoy was walking with her husband and other members of the Mamanwa tribes towards Barangay Taganito proper when three suspects headed allegedly by certain Niko Dela Mente suddenly appeared then shot the victim then fled.

Porogoy sustained gunshot wound in her body and was immediately brought to Taganito Mining Company clinic for first aid then brought to Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City which is about 60 kilometers away.

Investigators from Claver Municipal Police office recovered from the crime scene one (1) empty shell of caliber 45 pistol including one live ammunition of same caliber of pistol.

Claver Municipal Police Station said they are still conducting pursuit operation for possible apprehension of the said suspects.

Aside from other possible motives in the assassination attempt, authorities suspected the slay attempt may have something to do with conflict of some members of the Mamanwa tribes with the mining firm Taganito Mining Corporation.

Some Mamanwa tribes are in favor of the presence of the mining firm in their ancestral domain area while some wanted the mining firm out due environmental problems and conflict in ancestral rights.

Construction of P2-B Nickel Processing and Copper Smelting Plant is on-going within Mamanwa tribal area. (PNA/Ben Serrano)
