MANIPULATIONS IN THE FIGHT VS. DENGUE? Does the name “Dr. Metodio A. Palaypay, M.D.” sound familiar to you? If you will tell me no, it is not familiar to you, I would not take it against you for that name is not familiar to me too, but then, he has an explosive disclosure about supposed manipulations in the country’s fight against the fatal disease, dengue.

In an informal talk with me last Wednesday, August 17, 2011, in the presence of Dr. Ponciano Aberin, a current consultant on ecology of the University of the Philippines, Dr. Palaypay told me  and alternative medicine doctor, Hilda Ong, that the campaign against dengue here is skewered, and is aimed not really at eliminating the disease, but in allowing multinational companies to profit immensely.

Dr. Palaypay is right now the executive director of the National Committee on Urban Pest Control (NCUPC), a government-private sector partnership aimed at putting “pest control in the center of all efforts of food safety, public health and property protection”, and which is holding the “Imagine Food Safety, Public Health and Property Protection Without Pest Control” seminar on September 22, 2011 in Manila.

DISINFORMATION IN THE DENGUE CAMPAIGN: Dr. Palaypay’s thesis was this: there is a lot of disinformation in the fight against dengue right now. For example, authorities are insisting that dengue-carrying mosquitoes thrive in dirty surroundings and dirty water so that, as a counter-measure against the insects, a drive to promote cleanliness is being pushed nationwide.

But, Dr. Palaypay noted, this kind of an information campaign is wrong, because the mosquito dengue carriers, known as Aedes aegypti, cannot live in dirty water. The truth is that, Dr. Palaypay clarified, they live and multiply in clean and clear waters and in clean surroundings.

Then, Dr. Palaypay added, it is very easy to kill Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, with the use of a small, black-painted wooden stick dipped into a glass of clear water left in dark corners of every home. 

This “gadget” is intended to attract the mosquitoes, which will be enticed to lay their eggs in the stick. After two or three days of being left alone, the glass and the stick containing the eggs are then retrieved, with the stick and the water being thrown on a hot pavement or doused with boiling water.

DENGUE FIGHT FAVORS MULTINATIONALS? But, why is this system not being used, even if it could be employed with ease and great success among the 28 million or so elementary, high school and college students across the country who can be required to employ the “wooden stick” approach as part of their curriculum?

The answer, Dr. Palaypay told us, is that, a process like this would give no profits to anyone, and would in fact contravene the business agenda of multinationals who sell expensive products and methodologies to us to fight the mosquitoes and, later, to cure dengue patients. This is the reason why Filipinos are not being given the main road map to fight dengue, the doctor added.

Manipulasyon sa paglaban vs. dengue?

MANIPULASYON SA PAGLABAN VS. DENGUE? Pamilyar ba kayo sa pangalan “Dr. Metodio A. Palaypay, M.D.”? Hindi ko kayo masisisi kung sasabihin ninyong hindi, kasi hindi din ako pamilyar sa pangalang yan, pero mayroon siyang eksplosibong pagbubunyag ukol sa diumano ay manipulasyong nagaganap sa paglaban ng bansa sa nakamamatay na dengue.

Sa kanyang pakikipag-usap sa akin noong Miyerkules, Agosto 17, 2011, sa harap nina Dr. Ponciano Aberin, isang consultant on ecology sa University of the Philippines, at alternative medicine doctor, Hilda Ong, sinabi ni Dr. Palaypay na dispalinghado ang kampanya laban sa dengue sa Pilipinas, sapagkat hindi nito layon na tapusin na ang dengue kundi tulungan ang mga banyagang kompanya na kumita.

Si Dr. Palaypay ang executive director ng National Committee on Urban Pest Control (NCUPC), isang government-private sector partnership na nagnanais ilagay ang pest control sa sentro ng lahat ng pagkilos sa kaligtasan sa pagkain at kalusugang pampubliko. Magsasagawa ang NCUPC ng isang seminar, “Imagine Food Safety, Public Health and Property Protection without Pest Control” sa Septyembre 22, 2011 sa Manila.

MALI-MALING IMPORMASYON SA DENGUE CAMPAIGN:Ganito ang sinasabi ni Dr. Palaypay: sobra ang mali-maling impormasyong ikinakalat ngayon sa kampanya laban sa dengue. Halimbawa, sinasabi ng mga autoridad na ang lamok na nagdadala ng dengue ay dumarami sa maruming kapaligiran at maruming tubig, kaya naman sa paglaban sa dengue, sinasabing ang kailangan ay ang pagsusulong ng paglilinis sa buong bansa.

Pero sinasabi ni Dr. Palaypay na ang ganitong impormasyon ay mali, sapagkat ang mga lamok na nagdadala ng dengue, ang mga Aedes aegypti, ay hindi nabubuhay sa maruming tubig. Ang totoo, sabi ni Dr. Palaypay, ang mga ito ay nabubuhay sa malinis na tubig at malinis na kapaligiran lamang.

Ganundin, niliwanag ni Dr. Palaypay na napakadali palang patayin ang mga lamok na Aedes aegypti, gamit lamang ang isang maliit at pinturado ng itim na patpat na kahoy, na ilulubog sa iang basong malinis na tubig at iiwanan sa mga madidilim na bahagi ng mga kabahayan.

Ang “instrumentong” ito ay makaka-bighani ng mga lamok at mag-eengganyo sa kanilang mangitlog sa patpat. Matapos ang dalawa o tatlong araw, ang baso at ang patpat na naglalaman na ng mga itlog ng lamok ay kukunin at totostahin sa mainit na kalsada o simento, o di kaya ay bubuhusan ng kumukulong tubig.

MGA PAGLABAN SA DENGUE PUMAPABOR SA MGA BANYAGA? Pero, bakit ba hindi ginagamit itong sistemang ito, bagamat maaari itong isulong ng walang problema, at ng may katagumpayan pa, sa hanay ng 28 milyong mga estudyante sa elementarya, high school at kolehiyo sa bansa, na maaaring maglagay ng mga nasabing patpat sa kanilang mga bahay bilang bahagi ng kanilang pag-aaral?

Ang sagot, sabi ni Dr. Palaypay, ay ito: ang simpleng sistema sa paglaban sa dengue ay hindi magbibigay ng yaman kaninuman, at kokontra pa sa layunin ng mga banyagang kompanya na nagnanais magtinda ng kanilang mga mamahaling gamit at gamot upang labanan ang mga lamok at gamutin ang mga may dengue. Ito ang dahilan kung bakit tayong mga Pilipino ay hindi sinasabihan ng tamang paraan ng paglaban sa sakit na ito, dagdag pa niya.
