Miracles for Pasig River

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple…” (Psalm 119:130, the Holy Bible).

ROTARIANS PULL MIRACLES TO CLEAN PASIG RIVER: Rotarians leave no stone unturned in giving “service above self” to the poor and the needy, I know, but it is also amazing how they could pull miracles in their quest to make the environment clean, as shown by a project to help clean the Pasig River in Manila which is now completed by the Rotary Club of Sta. Ana, Manila under Rotary International District 3810.

Rotary Club of Sta. Ana’s ChangeMaker President Erick Candidato showed this amazing nature of Rotarians on Friday, August 5, 2011, to audiences watching and listening to BATAS INTERNET TV (which is viewable nationwide and worldwide at the website www.batasmedia.com), and in various cable TV and radio stations in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The interview can now be viewed at this link: http://livestre.am/UF7i.

P5 M WATER-TREATMENT PLANT COMPLETED: Erick said that his club, after finishing the P5 million worth-water-treatment plant in Sta. Ana, Manila with the help of Rotary International, is now supervising it, to boost clearing the Pasig River from dirt and debris. He said this plant is part of a “3-H Rotary International Project” meant to address “health, hunger and humanity” problems in Manila.

Under his term as ChangeMaker president for Rotary Year 2011-2012, Erick said his club is also engaged in providing allowances to help poor but intelligent elementary and high school students complete their primary and secondary education, and that his members have also finished “community sanitation projects” by teaching students the proper technique of washing hands, and teaching Sta. Ana residents waste segregation techniques.

WHY DID RP PRESIDENT MEET WITH REBEL LEADER? There is merit in the criticism of Sen. Francis Escudero against President Aquino’s having met with Al Haj Murad Ebraim, chair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF): indeed, why did the Philippine head of state and chief executive of government agree to confer with the head of a group challenging Philippine sovereignty?

What was so important in that meeting that the very president of this country himself had to fly to meet the chair of the rebel group somewhere? Would it not have been better if the government’s presidential advisers have been the one to meet with Murad first, at least during this time that the talks are merely exploratory?

MUST DE LIMA COMMIT ANOTHER MISTAKE? And so, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima was wrong with her public suspicions that former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo left the country surreptitiously to go to Hong Kong for medical examination.

But must she commit another mistake by pinning down an immigration employee on charges that this employee committed an error in listing down Arroyo’s surname with just a single “r”?

De Lima and the Bureau of Immigration should remember that anyone leaving the country will have to present his or her passport at the immigration counter at the airport, which is then electronically recorded by placing it facedown on a machine at that counter, so that any error or mistake would actually be machine-made.
