Double standards in Phl justice

BY ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand...” (Isaiah 41:10, the Holy Bible).

ECHEVERRI AND DOUBLE STANDARDS: If Caloocan City Mayor Recom Echiverri thinks his defiance of an Ombudsman order suspending him from office is the right thing to do, he has got it all wrong---so far, what he has succeeded in doing is showing that there is a double standard of justice in this country---one for the allies of the administration and another one for the opposition.

While Echiverri has successfully evaded complying with the Ombudsman order, Administrator Prospero Pichay Jr. of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), a known ally of former President Arroyo, on the other hand, was immediately sacked from office, also on orders of the Ombudsman, with Malacanang itself implementing the order.

“TAKE IT LIKE A MAN”: A reader of the Philippine Star calling himself or herself “Mabayuan” had this to say on Echiverri’s antics: “This is what I mean---the mayor of a city does not heed another government agency. No wonder our country does not progress anymore, (this) is due to these politicians always making a mockery of the system.

“(To Echeverri:) take the suspension and clear your name. Do not make a press release and involve your supporters in this matter. Take it like a man, like ex-President Estrada, and face the music…”

INJUSTICES IN THE COURTS BREED GOD’S CURSES: And this is one reason why there is a continuing perception that in the Philippines, there is a “culture of impunity” among the “big fishes” here, as Justice Secretary Leila De Lima whined during a TV program last Tuesday, July 19, 2011---those who are rich and powerful, and the close allies of the powers-that-be, could never be punished and “touched” in their respective turfs.

This is a travesty not just of the laws of this country anymore, but of God’s laws, and it is something that is enabling God’s curses to come to our country and our people, making life difficult and oppressive for many of us. “… maintain justice in the courts…” the Holy Bible, in its Amos 5:15, says.

But because of the double standard of justice that is so prevalent and which has become the trademark of fairness, Philippine-style---one for friends and relations and one for political foes and enemies---justice is trampled upon and mocked, setting us all up for destruction and death (see Deuteronomy 28:15-68 and Matthew 7:24-27 of the Bible).

WAYS TO GOD’S BLESSINGS: But there is a way out for the death and destruction coming from God’s curses, and one of them is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 of the Bible, which says: “…If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sins, and heal their land…”

Another is that found in Deuteronomy 8:1, 19: “Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors… If you ever forget the LORD your God… I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed…”
