Marcos burial: matter of terminology

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…What would profit a man to gain the whole world and yet lose his soul?” (Matthew 16:26, the Holy Bible).

MARCOS BURIAL A MATTER OF TERMINOLOGY: I believe that the issue of burying former President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani is just a problem of terminology. If we only use the proper term, then all objections maybe set aside to permit something that the law and tradition both allow to be done.

My point is that, Sen. Bongbong Marcos, the son of President Marcos, should stop saying his father must be given a hero’s burial. Using the words “hero’s burial” is a highly controversial terminology that only invites dissension.

I suggest Bongbong uses the words “presidential burial”. This could only mean that Marcos, a former president, is being buried as a president, which is only rightful since, indeed, he was a former president, and burying him at the Libingan will only be in compliance with the law and tradition allowing former presidents to be buried in that place.

CURSE AT COMELEC: ONLY GOD CAN HEAL IT: Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. of the Commission on Elections is correct, there is a curse in the commission that is preventing the appointment of its two new commissioners---the curse of widespread perception that corruption and case-fixing are prevalent evils in that agency which subvert the will of the people.

Brillantes should be told that he will be able to heal that curse only if he institutes measures that will remove corruption and case-fixing from the poll body, and this can be done only with an honest-to-goodness instruction of all commissioners and officials and employees of the commission about righteousness coming from God.

For starters, Brillantes must order that every morning, a Bible (or Koran) study and prayer meeting, for at least fifteen minutes, be held before everyone in the commission start discharging their duties and responsibilities. Then, before knocking off in the afternoon, another fifteen-minute Bible study and prayer meeting be held likewise.

And before Brillantes or any other wise guy says this maybe a violation of the separation of the Church and State, may I say that imbibing righteousness from the Bible (or from the Koran for those in the Muslim faith) and increasing spirituality is not the sole duty of the Church but of anyone who wants to cure the curses in his life.

SERVING IN GOV’T MEANS SERVING GOD: I am sure that, if this effort to instill righteousness among those in government is pursued not only in Comelec but in the entire bureaucracy as well, then we will no longer see useless spending, or even stealing, of government funds and properties, like holding seminars for barangay officials in beach resorts or plush hotels.

For a worker who is righteous and spiritually-inclined will always know that serving in government is serving God, who wants all of those who aspire to lead to become servants---not kings or queens---of all, and to refuse earthly greediness to save his soul (see Mark 10:43-44 and Matthew 16:26 of the Bible).
