Media’s role in reforming people

EX-SEAMAN KILLS WIFE, CHILDREN, SELF OUT OF JEALOSUY? “Shocking” is a relatively minor word to use in describing what former seaman Emmanuel “Jet” Ponce of Talisay City, southern Cebu, did last Sunday: he killed his wife Melinda, a bank branch manager, and his three children, and their housemaid, in cold blood, with no apparent reason other than blind rage, confused mind, and madness, arising from jealousy.

This is what the Bible has been warning about, in its Deuteronomy 28:15 and 28: “However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands… all these curses will come upon you… The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind…”

MEDIA’S ROLE IN REFORMING PEOPLE: I wish to congratulate the mediamen from the Asia Pacific who signed the “Manila Declaration”, a document aimed at renewing their commitment to practice responsible journalism during emergencies and violent events, during the Regional Media Conference for Southeast and East Asia last Friday, October 14, 2011.

But then, it is my experience that declarations like the “Manila Declaration” and gathering of media personalities at one time or another have not really been productive of some good for the country and the people. They are largely forgotten after a while.

Why? Because mediamen, from the Philippines and around the world, continue to ignore one basic yet very important role of their profession, and that is using media to cause a change for the good of humanity, a change anchored on godliness and righteousness based on the Word of God. Media is not only for free expression---it is for reforming people with the use of the Bible.

World Association of Newspapers at PAPI.
