Eating “embalmed” food? Abuse of judicial power?

PROCESSED FOOD AND MEAT, “EMBALMED” FOOD AND MEAT: The horrors of eating processed food, among them health and life-threatening diseases like cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes, got highlighted once again by medical-doctor-cancer-survivor Dr. Marilou Catibog, the guest of the Rotary Club of Intramuros last Thursday, 21 October 2010.

The prescription against all these, Dr. Catibog said, is to avoid eating processed food and meat altogether, for partaking of them during our meals is very much like eating “embalmed animals”, with each and every chemical that went into the “embalming process” (to preserve the food) also going into our bodies.

TAKE PLENTY OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS: Eat vegetables, fruits, and take plenty of dietary supplements instead, said Dr. Catibog, whose parents (father and mother) died of cancer and whose siblings are also battling with the disease because of their exposure to “embalmed food”. Dr. Catibog said she licked the “Big C” by precisely eating vegetables, fruits, avoiding meat, and imbibing a lot of dietary supplements.

Wow! And to think that our people are bombarded with daily advertisements in all media, especially with the advent of the Christmas season, enticing them to eat processed food as if their very lives depended on it.

SC PLAGIARISM ISSUE NOW AN INTERNATIONAL CONCERN: The Supreme Court order directing UP College of Law Dean Marvic Leonen and his fellow professors from the State University to explain why they should not be sanctioned for speaking out against Justice Mariano Del Castillo on the issue of plagiarism has now become an international concern.

The American law professors whose article was allegedly used without attribution by Del Castillo to deny the Supreme Court petition of Filipina comfort women who wanted an apology and reparation from Japan are now literally going to town, publicly berating the court’s order against Leonen and company.

Professors Evan Fox-Decent and Evan Criddle said in “Opinio Juris”: “(We) believe that it is not the place of a court to sanction individuals or institutions that have been critical of it.

ABUSE OF JUDICIAL POWER? “This principle is especially important in the case of a law school, where discussion of cases is an integral part of legal pedagogy. The idea that a law school or its members cannot express an opinion on a case is contrary to the best practices of law schools everywhere, and an affront to free expression.

“That a court would assert jurisdiction to sanction its detractors is, in our opinion, an abuse of judicial power. To the best of our knowledge, no court in a democracy has ever attempted to assert the kind of jurisdiction the SC is asserting now against the UP College of Law….”

 “Embalsamadong” pagkain?
