ROTARIANS AS MIRACLE WORKERS FOR SERVICE ABOVE SELF: I delivered a speech during the “Governor’s Visit and Fellowship for Service Above Self and Four Way Test” of the Rotary Club of Intramuros, District 3810 of Rotary International, last Thursday, September 29, 2011. I am sharing this speech with our readers here, in several installments. 

Here is the first part of the speech, which was entitled “Rotarians as miracle workers for service above self”: “Leadership in Rotary is one of the most treasured core values of Rotarians today. 

“Along with the other Rotary core values---service, fellowship, diversity and integrity---leadership is one characteristic that distinguishes Rotarians from other members of other socio-civic groups, in the Philippines and in the whole world.

ROTARIANS AS RECOGNIZED LEADERS: “Worldwide, Rotarians are recognized leaders in many fields. This is so because Rotarians are top men and women in government, in politics, in private business, in media, and even in spiritual groups.

“And among the many international organizations in existence today, Rotary and its 1.2 million Rotarians around the world are the conceded leaders when it comes to giving service to the poor and the needy.

“Men of power and influence, and men who want things done and done rightly at that, invariably seek Rotarians when there is work to be done, especially when the job on the block pertains to dutifully and faithfully serving others.

ROTARIANS SEEK TO END POLIO: “Bill Gates, the college drop-out who became a billionaire by putting up Microsoft Corporation, hit the nail on the head when he spoke during the closing plenary of the 2011 Rotary International Convention in New Orleans, USA, the convention that I, together with my wife and daughter who are also Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Intramuros like me, attended with pride.

“Gates acknowledged, to the great delight of the Rotarians present then that, in the final fight against polio, the fight to ultimately eradicate this debilitating disease from the face of the globe, the fight that has been repeatedly branded as `this close’, Rotarians must necessarily lead the way once more.

“Gates said and I quote: `…the best science and logistics in the world won’t matter if we don’t have the will, and the funding, to put the tools to use to get rid of every last case (of polio). And that means we need to do even more to leverage the power of your 1.2 million members to keep polio front and center’…” More of this next issue…stay with us!!!

Rotarians, matindi sa paglilingkod, Part I

MATINDING PAGLILINGKOD NG HIGIT SA SARILI NG MGA ROTARIANS: Nagbigay po ako ng talumpati sa “Governor’s Visit and Fellowship for Service Above Self and Four Way Test” ng Rotary Club of Intramuros, District 3810 ng Rotary International, noong Huwebes, Septyembre 29, 2011. Nais ko pong ibahagi ito sa ating mga mambabasa dito. 

Ito po ang panimula ng talumpati na pinamagatang “Mga Rotarians, matitindi sa paglilingkod ng higit sa sarili”: “Ang pagiging lider sa Rotary ay isa sa mga pinakakaingatang adhikain ng mga Rotarians sa ngayon.

 “Kasama ng iba pang mga batayang adhikain sa Rotary---paglilingkod, pagkakaisa sa pagdiriwang, pagkakaiba-iba, at karangalan---ang pagiging lider ay isang katangian na nagtatampok sa mga Rotarians mula sa mga kasapi ng ibang mga samahang pang-sibiko, sa Pilipinas man o sa buong mundo.

MGA ROTARIAN, KINIKILALANG MGA LIDER: “Sa buong daigdig, ang mga Rotarians ay kilalang mga lider sa maraming larangan. Ito ay bunga ng katotohanang ang mga Rotarians ay matataas sa gobyerno, sa pulitika, sa pagne-negosyo, sa media, at maging sa mga grupong pang-espirituwal.

“At sa hanay ng maraming mga pandaigdigang samahan sa ngayon, kinikilalang lider ang Rotary at ang kanyang 1.2 milyong mga Rotarians sa buong mundo, kung ang pag-uusapan ay ang pagbibigay ng serbisyo sa mga mahihirap at mga nangangailangan.

“Ang mga taong nasa kapangyarihan at may mga impluwensiya, at yung mga nagnanais na maging mabunga ang anumang pagkilos nila, ay laging ang mga Rotarians ang hanap kung may trabahong dapat gawin, lalo na kung ang trabaho ay may kaugnayan sa paglilingkod sa kapwa.

ROTARIANS, TATAPUSIN NA ANG POLIO: “Tama si Bill Gates, ang taong di nakatapos ng kolehiyo pero naging bilyonaryo matapos niyang itayo ang Microsoft Corporation, sa kanyang talumpati sa 2011 Rotary International Convention sa News Orleans, USA, isang pagtitipon na dinaluhan ko at ng aking asawa at anak na parehong kasapi din ng Rotary Club of Intramuros.

“Kinilala ni Gates, sa kasiyahan ng mga Rotarians na dumalo sa nasabing kumbensiyon, na ang pinal na laban sa polio---ang labang tatapos na sa nakakamatay na sakit na ito mula sa mukha ng daigdig, at labang isinasalarawang `ganito na lamang kaliit’---ay kailangang pangunahan minsan pa ng mga Rotarians.

“Sinabi ni Gates: `…ang pinakamahusay na siyensiya at pinakamalaking pera sa mundo ay mawawalan ng saysay kung wala tayong pagnanais na gawin ang lahat upang mawala na ang polio. Ang ibig sabihin nito, kailangan nating gamitin ng mas mahusay pa ang kapangyarihan ng 1.2 million Rotarians upang laging napapag-usapan ang polio sa lahat ng dako…” May dugtong pa po ito.
