EXTRAVAGANCE AMONG PUBLIC OFFICIALS BARRED BY LAW: To those in government at this time of economic difficulties among the greater number of our people, here are two reminders: “Public officials and employees and their families shall lead modest lives appropriate to their positions and income. They shall not indulge in extravagant or ostentatious display of wealth in any form” (Section 4 [h], Republic Act 6713).
“Thoughtless extravagance in expenses for pleasure or display during a period of acute public want or emergency maybe stopped by order of the courts…” (Art. 25, Civil Code of the Philippines).

READ THE BIBLE, OBEY GOD, TO FIGHT 20 TYPHOONS COMING TO PH: There will be about 20 or 21 typhoons that will hit the Philippines this year, according to PAGASA, or the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration which will cause a lot of rains, floods and strong winds. As we have been repeating here, the only way to fight these calamities is to read the Bible, and obey God’s commands (Matthew 7:24-27, the Bible).

NAPOLCOM TOO LATE THE HERO: While we laud the National Police Commission in its decision to dismiss a Manila police officer (Senior Inspector Joselito Binayug) after a year of trial over his having tortured, on camera, a suspect inside a police station, we wish that the dismissal could be have been made much earlier. As it is, the dismissal has no more sting, as our people do not remember the case anymore.

PNOY NOT LEGALLY BARRED FROM BUYING PORSCHE: Can President Aquino be legally barred from buying things for himself, like his second-hand Porsche, while he is in office? The answer is no, he cannot be legally barred from doing so.
Yet, it is not the legality of the purchase that many are looking into, but the timeliness of it all, what with many Filipinos still being unable to buy food for themselves and their families, while their President is buying a luxury car, even if second hand.

SANDIGANBAYAN NOT UNDER DE LIMA: Is the Sandiganbayan obliged to explain its actions---particularly its approval of the plea bargaining deal with former Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia---to Justice Secretary Leila De Lima or even to President Aquino?
The answer is no, it is not. It is answerable only to the Supreme Court, which has the sole power to set aside the deal or not, subject of course to existing rules like double jeopardy.

INSPIRASYON SA BUHAY: “Huwag kayong mag-iimpok ng yaman sa daigdig, kung saan sinisira ang mga ito ng mga tanga at mga hayop, at kung saan ang mga ito ay ninanakaw. Mag-impok kayo ng yaman sa langit, kung saan hindi nakakapanira ang tanga at mga hayop, at kung saan walang nakakapasok na magnanakaw…” (Mateo 6:19-20, Bibliya).

PAGKA-MALUHO NG MGA PUBLIC OFFICIALS IPINAGBABAWAL: Sa mga nasa gobyerno sa panahong ito ng kahirapan sa hanay ng nakararaming mamamayan, naririto po ang dalawang paalala: “Ang mga pampublikong opisyales at ang kanilang mga pamilya ay mamumuhay ng simple batay sa kanilang posisyon at sahod. Hindi sila dapat nagpapakita ng luho sa yaman” (Section 4 [h], Republic Act 6713).
“Ang walang kabuluhang luho sa mga gastusing pangsariling kasiyahan sa panahon ng matinding kahirapan ay maaaring patigilin ng mga hukuman…” (Art. 25, Civil Code of the Philippines).

NAPOLCOM, NAHULI ANG DESISYON: Bagamat pinapupurihan natin ang National Police Commission sa pagkakasibak nito sa isang Manila police officer (Senior Inspector Joselito Binayug) matapos ang isang taong paglilitis sa isyu ng kanyang pagkaka-torture, sa harap ng TV camera, ng isang suspect sa loob ng police station, sana naman ay naging mas mabilis ang aksiyong ito. Sa ngayon, nakalimutan na ng tao ang kaso kaya halos wala ng kagat ang balita.

PNOY NOT LEGALLY BARRED FROM BUYING PORSCHE: May pagbabawal ba sa batas laban sa pagbili ni Pangulong Aquino ng mga bagay para sa kanyang sarili, gaya ng segunda-manong Porsche, habang siya ay nasa posisyon? Ang sagot: walang pagbabawal sa batas.
Kaya lang, hindi ang isinasaad ng batas ang sinisilip ng marami sa isyung ito, kundi ang pagiging nasa panahon nito, lalo na at maraming Pilipino pa rin ang di nakakabili ng kanilang mga pagkain para sa kanilang mga sarili at kanilang mga pamilya, habang ang kanilang Pangulo ay mayroong luxury car, bagamat segunda mano.

SANDIGANBAYAN HINDI SAKOP NI DE LIMA: May tungkulin ba ang Sandiganbayan na ipaliwanag ang kanyang mga pagkilos---lalo na sa kaso ni dating Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia---kay Justice Secretary Leila De Lima o maging kay Pangulong Aquino?
Ang sagot: wala itong tungkulin. Ang Sandiganbayan ay mananagot lamang sa Korte Suprema, na siyang may natatanging kapangyarihan upang isantabi ang pagkilos ng Sandiganbayan, batay siyempre sa mga batas gaya ng double jeopardy.
