Angara pushes Senate Bill No. 52 versus cybercrime

SENATE OFFICE, Manila, January 4, 2011-Senator Edgardo J. Angara, chair of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology pushes Senate Bill No. 52, “An Act Defining Cybercrime, Providing for Prevention, Investigation and Imposition of Penalties Therefore and for Other Purposes.”

 

In a published report showed in Congress of the Cybercrime Prevention Bill, it stated an exponential increase in numbers of internet users in the country observed that there was a steady rise online Crimes.

 

He said that it was filed during the previous Congress and was a few days short of its Third Reading before being passed into law. It has been re-filed in the 15th Congress and is now awaiting the final Reading in its parent committees. 

 

In a recent study last year, about 30 million Filipinos used the internet on a regular basis, adding that two-thirds of the online population or nearly 20 million Filipinos used Facebook and other forms of social media.

 

The Senator explained that with the advent of internet, Filipinos always strive to keep in touch with their friends, relatives and love ones through Facebook. Yahoo Messenger, Skype and other online media where criminals are attracted are utilized to identify their target victims.

 

Angara authored Senate Bill No. 52, otherwise known as the Cybercrime Prevention Bill which seeks to effectively prevent and punish online offenses such as hacking, fraud, cybersex and child pornography through prison time or a hefty fine of at least P200,000 to fight online crimes.

 

Angara said that these online crimes must be put in jail to protect the citizenry who uses internet in a regular basis, asserting that these are threats to the civil liberties that must be taken seriously with a comprehensive set of laws concerning the World Wide Web. (Jason de Asis)

Fire razes Pilar market

ROXAS City — The public market of Pilar, Capiz was razed by fire on January 1.

Some eight market stalls were burned; the damage was pegged at P200,000, according to Fire Officer 2 Marlon Garbo, information officer of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here.
