Dapitan 2011 Palaro: focusing on Rizal, too

December 17, 2010

2011 PALARONG PAMBANSA SHOWCASING RIZAL’S HEROISM, TOO: It is now all systems go for the hosting of the 2011 Palarong Pambansa by Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte, and from the looks of it, not only sports and athletics will be highlighted during the games, but the heroism of the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, as well.

In an interview, former Zamboanga del Norte Rep. Romeo G. Jalosjos said the Palaro in Dapitan will also kick-off the passage of a law that would declare 2011 as “Jose Rizal Renaissance Year”, during which all schools across the country will hold  activities that will focus on the heroism of Rizal, who lived in the city for four years as an exile, on orders of Spanish authorities in the 19th century.

Jalosjos is spearheading the holding of the national games in Dapitan City, assuring everyone that, first, some P500 million will be raised to complete sports facilities which will be used by participating athletes and, second, that the games will be the best attended sports event in 2011, showing Mindanao as a peaceful, and not a war, zone.

“The key: We will make it happen. From zero we will have the funds,” Jalosjos added.

BIRTH OF JESUS IN THE MANGER: Easily one of the most fondly-remembered events in the Bible is now immortalized as the third Joyful Mystery in the Roman Catholic Christians’ Holy Rosary, and this is the birth of Jesus Christ.

Mainly because the event augurs good tidings and happy cheers as it ushers in gift-giving and camaraderie among believers worldwide, the birth of Jesus Christ has become one of the cornerstones of the Catholic Christians’ faith as it heralds the great love of God for man.

But completely different from this present-day happy scenario is the account of the birth of Christ that is found in Luke 2:1 to 20, and in Matthew 1:18 to 25 of the Bible, both of which paint a very humble yet solemn and dignified occasion, befitting the Son of God.

NO ROOM FOR THE BIRTH OF JESUS: This story starts with a census participated in by Joseph, the man who was pledged to marry Mary, the Virgin Mother of Christ. During the census, Mary gave birth to Jesus in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The birth of Jesus was announced by an angel of the Lord to the shepherds who were watching their flocks at night. The angel said that the Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord, had been born. Just then, a great company of heavenly host appeared with the angel, saying “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.”
The shepherds then left their flocks, looked for the baby wrapped in clothes in a manger and, when they found him, started telling everyone about him, glorifying and praising God.

REAL PRESCRIPTION PERIOD FOR VIZCONDE: With utmost due respect to those who say that the Vizconde Massacre case will prescribe on June 30, 2011, the twentieth year from June 30, 1991 brutal killing of Estrellita Vizconde and her daughters, Carmela and Jennifer, the real prescription period is way, way beyond 2011, or until 2030 yet.

While Art. 90 of the Revised Penal Code says that a crime, such as the Visconde slayings, will prescribe in 20 years, Art. 91 is saying...

December 15, 2010
BY ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO

SC IN AN UNPRECEDENTED MESS: In the 32 years (and counting) that God has given me as an active media practitioner in the Philippines, I have never seen the Supreme Court in a more messy situation than where it is today, with charges being aired left and right against it and its justices for plagiarism, bribery, corruption, culpable violation of the Constitution, and betrayal of public trust.

Why are all these happening? Where are things headed for the so-called “l...
