ROXAS CITY, Philippines – Two persons were killed while 108 barangays in Capiz have been flooded in the wake of days of rains that began since Wednesday evening.
Retired police Supt. Jose Daradar, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, identified the victims as Gregy delos Santos, 10, of Barangay Dapdapan in Sapian town; and Richard Diestro, 15, of Tabuc Sur, Panitan.
Delos Santos died after he fell into the Dapdapan River while crossing the footbridge Friday noon.
Diestro drowned when he attempted to cross the Panay River in Panitan on Saturday. His body was fished out by residents hours later, according to Daradar.
The continuous rains have caused rivers to swell and flooded low-lying villages in the towns of Pontevedra, Panay, Panitan, Maayon, Sigma, Mambusao, Dumarao, Jamindan, Tapaz, Cuartero and Dao, Daradar said.
Thirteen barangays were under water in Panay and eight in Pontevedra, with 66 families in the latter town given shelter in two evacuation centers.
In Panitan, about 18 barangays remained under water, affecting 399 families; 15 barangays in Sigma, with 1,053 families affected; 20 barangays in Dao, and seven in Maayon.
In Mambusao, 15 villages are under water, affecting 1,844 families. Floods were also reported in seven barangays in Cuartero, eight in Jamindan, and two in Tapaz.
Daradar said the road in Barangay Agkilo in Panitan town was also rendered impassable to all kinds of vehicles because a Ceres bus liner that got stranded due to the flood has been blocking the road.

My attention was riveted at Sen. Edgardo J. Angara’... Continue reading...
