Davao City incidents connected with the Bible?

BY ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you…”†(Romans 12:3, the Holy Bible).

CONNECTION BETWEEN TWO DAVAO CITY INCIDENTS AND THE BIBLE: Two interesting stories came out from Davao City this week which got me wondering if there was any connection between them at all and the Bible. The first was the unprecedented flashfloods that hit the city’s Bgy. Matina, resulting in the death of 30 people.

The second was the punching by Mayor Sarah Duterte of Sheriff Abe Andres which was caught by TV cameras, allegedly because Andres refused to comply with the mayor’s request to delay by two hours the demolition of shanties in the city’s Agdao District.

Could it be that the killer flashfloods, brought about by unprecedented heavy rainfall, and Sarah’s display of fury against an evidently terrified sheriff, are forebodings of worse things to come? For one, I am convinced the rains and the floods form part of the warnings given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:24 -27 of the Bible, against people who no longer obey God’s commands.

Then, on the other hand, Sarah’s “manly behavior” and the sheriff’s obvious lack of compassion for the poor appear to be the kind of conduct that Jesus referred to in Mark 10:43-44 and Matthew 25:41-46 of the Bible, respectively.

“SIX METRO MAYORS NOT LIKE SARAH”: But there is an equally interesting sidelight to the Sarah Duterte-Abe Andres affair: the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan National Capital Region (Bayan-NCR) chapter is using the incident to assail six Metro Manila mayors who, it said, will never follow Duterte’s defense of her poor constituents against demolitions because of their “vested self-interests and those of their big business partners”.

I hope the mayors named by Bayan---Guia Gomez of San Juan, John Ray Tiangco of Malabon, Herbert Bautista of Quezon City, Florencio Bernabe Jr. of Paranaque  City, Alfredo Lim of Manila, Benhur Abalos of Mandaluyong---will be interested to defend themselves from this grave charge.

But then, did we ever hear of  Gomez, Tiangco, Bautista, Bernabe, Lim and Abalos preventing the demolition of shanties of poor families in their respective cities? As for me, I never did, and, instead, what I know is that the police from these places, which are under the control of the mayors, even act most of the time as the demolition teams themselves.

BIBLICAL INSIGHTS ON LEADERS AND COMPASSION FOR THE POOR: Just for the record, here is what Mark 10:43-44 of the Bible says: “… whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,†and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all…”  Matthew 25:41-46, on the other hand, says: “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

“ `For I was hungry… I was thirsty… I was a stranger… I needed clothes… I was sick and in prison, and you did not look after me.’ They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ ”
