Crab mentality hits Palaro 2011

BY ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them…” (Hebrews 7:25, the Holy Bible).

DAYS OF RECKONING FOR GLORIA: Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez maybe correct in saying that the plunder charges which former Solicitor General Frank Chavez filed against Gloria Arroyo was merely a response to President Aquino’s “not so subtle” order against the former president, but, being a lawyer himself, Suarez knows that Chavez’ complaint has ample basis.

I mean, with Gloria’s signatures allowing the use of hundreds of millions of funds belonging to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) for purposes other than for the benefit of the OFWs, plunder, at worst, or technical malversation, at best, was committed by her and her minions.

So Suarez and all Gloria supporters should now prepare themselves for a fierce legal battle to defend her and her officials, for, as Chavez accurately pointed out, “the day of reckoning has come.” This should also serve as a reminder against those in power---days of reckoning for past misdeeds will surely come, so that it is better to do good while in office.

CRAB MENTALITY HITS PALARO 2011: Crab mentality, that dreaded negative character attributed to many of our countrymen who are often envious of the success of others, seems to be gripping Zamboanga del Norte nowadays in relation to the staging in Dapitan City of Palarong Pambansa 2011.

Latest reports from Mindanao tell us that some politicians and some mediamen who are known detractors of former Rep. Romeo G. Jalosjos, the chairman of Palaro’s executive committee, have been trying to scare Mindanaoans with media claims that the Palaro is not pushing through in Dapitan.

The same reports indicate that some media personalities in the area are even saying they are willing to die if Palaro pushes through! Well, residents are praying God will not listen to these detractors, since all preparations are now complete for the games, with delegates from Region 3 already in town for it.

DIVORCING HUSBAND OR WIFE IS ADULTERY: With permissiveness having found its way in many parts of the world, including the Philippines, for a long time now, men separating from their wives and wives separating from their husbands, have become a common occurrence. Yet, for those who believe, God does not allow such separation or divorce.

“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her,” the Lord Jesus said in Mark 10:11 of the Bible, adding that “… if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery…” (Mark 10:12).

Jesus said that while Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce against his wife, it was only because men’s hearts were hardened. “But at the beginning of creation, God made them male and female… Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate…”  Jesus said (Mark 10:5, 6 and 9).

CONGRATS, SAMMY PAGDILAO & CIDG: For someone like me who spent some time being a police reporter for a major daily in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I got a thrill of a lifetime reading the news that the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police came up with a twist in the one-week ...

Capone’s ghost haunts tax evaders

In 1931, when the United States failed to prosecute Alphonse “Scarface Al” Capone for the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and other heinous crimes, government investigators took a different approach in bringing Capone to justice -- he was charged for tax evasion.  The following year, Capone was found guilty and sentenced to 11 years in federal prison.  Thus ended his reign of mayhem, murder, and corruption during the “...
