Fighting corruption with spirituality

BY ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will...” (Romans 12:2, the Holy Bible).

                                                            -ooo-

EIGHT-POINT AGENDA NO DIFFERENT FROM PREVIOUS OMBUDSMAN PLANS: The eight-point agenda of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales for the next seven years is impressive, but, sadly, it does not really differ from the directions already pursued by her predecessors who, judging by the backlog at the Office of the Ombudsman and by the continuing corruption in the country even now, all failed nevertheless.

What is even more glaringly significant, from her press conference last Friday, October 14, 2011, is Morales’ apparent lack of an agenda as to how God and spirituality can help in fighting graft and other anomalies in government.

                                                            -ooo-

CORRUPTION CAN BE FOUGHT ONLY WITH THE HELP OF GOD: Perhaps, this maybe due to a perception that combating corruption in government is a purely human endeavor and that God has nothing to do with it.  But, with due respect, this is gravely wrong. Corruption is caused by a corrupt heart, a heart that does not fear and love God.

A government official who does not fear and love God does not recognize God, and can therefore do almost anything. This is the reason why corruption thrives everywhere, more especially in our country. And this is what any Ombudsman who wants to succeed must address, with some sense of urgency.

“Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity…” is how Romans 1:18 of the Holy Bible describes this kind of an official.

                                                -ooo-

AFP MUST PROBE ROLP MORE CLOSELY: It would do well for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to look more closely into the existence of Reserve Officers League of the Philippines (ROLP), rather than dismiss it peremptorily by a “whistling in the dark” claim that ROLP is nothing and that it is not a group accredited with the AFP.

The last time that the AFP dismissed a group as inexistent was in 1986, in reference to the Reform-the-Armed Force Movement or RAM, saying RAM was unheard of. Until it led the military component of the EDSA People Power I Revolution that toppled the 20 year-Marcos rule.

                                                -ooo-

PNP CHIEF A ROTARIAN: Did you know that Director General Nicanor A. Bartolome, the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) until 2013, is a Rotarian, and was the Global President of the Rotary Club of Camp Crame for Rotary Year 2010-2011?

He disclosed this last Friday night, October 14, 2011, during the 11th induction of the Rotary Club of Sta. Mesa-Manila, whose president for Rotary Year 2011-2012 is Col. Roy Taguinod, the chief of the PNP Museum.

                                                -ooo-

AFP PROBE VS. ROLP, HININGI: Makakabuti para sa Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) na busisiing mabuti ang katayuan ng Reserve Officers League of the Philippines (ROLP), at alamin kung may ganito nga bang organisasyon o wala, bago pa man magsalita ng tapos ang AFP na wala namang ROLP at hindi ito rehistrado sa sandatahang lakas.

Ang huling pagkakataong nagsalita ang AFP na wala ang isang grupo ay noong 1986, noong sinabi nitong wala namang Reform-the Armed Forces Movement o RAM, kasi wala namang naririnig ukol dito---hanggang pangunahan ng RAM ang military component ng EDSA People Power I Revolution na tumapos sa 20 taong panunungkulan ni Marcos.

                                                -ooo-
