Archbishop marks 50th sacerdotal year

ROXAS City — Capiz Archbishop, Most Rev. Onesimo Gordoncillo, D.D., is celebrating his golden sacerdotal anniversary as a priest starting yesterday.

The 76-year old archbishop, who has been assigned to the archdiocese of Capiz for 25 years now after he was installed here in August 27, 1986, will have his golden jubilee celebration from March 17–18 this year here.

Top officials of the Catholic Church led by Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Most Rev. Edward Joseph Adams, D.D., is expected to grace the celebration, Knights of Columbus District Deputy Bienvenido Cortes said.

Cortes said other guests during Gordoncillo’s 25th sacerdotal rites include Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Kidapawan Bishop Romulo dela Cruz and Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Puebles.

Also expected to grace the celebration are Bishops Ernesto Salgado of Nueva Segovia; Angel Lagdameo of Jaro, Iloilo; Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan; Jose Advincula of San Carlos City; Patricio Buzon of Kabangkalan City; Antoniete Cabajog of Surigao; John Du of Dumaguete; and a lot more.

The celebration yesterday kicked off with a Eucharistic celebration at 10 a.m. at the Capiz Gymnasium here.

It was attended by Barangay Ecclesial Communities, parishes, schools and other catholic institutions in the province.

A tribute or “Halad” to Gordoncillo was offered at 1 p.m., Cortes said, adding that a dinner and a cultural show followed in the evening at the CAP Auditorium.

Today, the celebration will start with a Eucharistic celebration at the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral while the post-prandial speeches will be done at the Capiz Gymnasium during the luncheon program.

Gordoncillo, who was born in Jimalalud, Negros Occidental to Calixto and Ceferina Gordoncillo, was ordained to priesthood in the Dumaguete Cathedral in March 18, 1961.

It was in June 18, 1986 when he was appointed archbishop of Capiz and was installed as the second bishop of the province on August 27, 1986, Cortes said. (Jemin B. Guillermo/PIA/PN)

Pay early, BIR urges taxpayers

ROXAS City — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) called on taxpayers in the province to pay properly and on time.

“It’s income tax filing season once again and our patriotic duty is being challenged and called upon once more,” said Gil Tabanda, head of the BIR Revenue District Office No. 72.

The province’s top taxman has also solicited the support of the local tri-media practitioners to help remind taxpayers of the Income Tax Returns (ITR) filing and payments in April 15.

The BIR-Capiz has set a press conference on March 16. Expected to grace the media interaction are BIR Regional Director Glen Geraldino and Tabanda, among others.

This year’s tax campaign has the theme, “Buwis Mo Para sa Bagong Pilipinas.”

Tabanda said it describes the resolute desire of the BIR to collect the correct amount of taxes sufficient enough to support nation building. (Alex A. Lumaque/PIA/PN

Japan's Earthquake Sidetracks Libyan Crisis

By JOSEPH G. LARIOSA

CHICAGO (jGLi) – The Disaster in Japan is by no means a devastating event that would be the last thing anybody would ever want to have.

As misfortunes go, this will probably be one of those moments that will melt everybody’s heart and would prompt us to extend whatever help we can give.

Even if a country is as rich as Japan, a neighbor is bound to help or empathize with it. The nuclear meltdown in Japan is ...

Mar 18, 2011 - Friday Meditation (His Plan of Mercy!)
We often times reason that as long as we keep the good deeds (credits) ahead of the evil deeds (debits) we ought to be God’s special chosen ones for eternal glory. This is the human way of reasoning which people believe would be more fair.  It might be true in the human way of justice but it’s far from God’s plan of mercy.  Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? “says the Lord God.” Do I not r...

Nuclear Energy is
Not the Way!

PARTIDO KALIKASAN would like to
convey our deepest condolences and sympathy to all the victims of the recent
natural disaster in Japan. The meltdown of Fukushima nuclear power plant north
of Tokyo on the other hand is far from completely being a natural disaster.
This is bad human judgment to opt for nuclear energy despite all its inherent
dangers. The current disaster has raised serious threat not only to Japanese
citizens but also to huma...
