Butuan transport group set to hold mass transport strike on Monday

by Ben Serrano

     February 16, 2011

BUTUAN CITY (PNA) - Butuan’s transport sector belonging to Motorcycle Operators and Drivers’ Association of Butuan City today publicly announced that they will hold “public transport strike” on Monday February 21, 2011 locally known as “Transport Pahulay” to dramatize their fare rate hike increase.

The group which claimed more than 200 members of operators and drivers of passenger motorcycles or motorcycle pedicabs operating in Butuan City and suburbs claimed they could no longer bare the continuing increase of gasoline now sold at P52.35 per liter at different gasoline stations here in Butuan City.

Marino Escobido, president of the Motorcycle Operators and Drivers’ Association of Butuan City and Roy Guiral, secretary general of said group told PNA they are willing to hold talks with Butuan City local officials particularly the City Council Committee on Public Utilities chaired by City Councilor Atty. Raul Bernabe.

The two transport group officials claimed that sometime in 2009, said committee at the height of continuing oil price hike approved the group’s demand for fare hike

“But the city council committee requested us not to implement it after the sudden drop of oil price hike and so we heed to the request on condition that we will implement the approved fare rate hike but now since the gasoline price remained steadily at P52.00 for weeks now, we wanted it implemented back that’s all what we wanted”, Escobido and Guiral said.

PNA tried to contact Atty. Bernabe many times but to no avail. (PNA/Ben Serrano)

People Power in the Middle East – Déjà vu

The people power revolution in Egypt that forced Hosni Mubarak to resign as president reminds me of the 1986 people power revolution – also known as EDSA, the acronym of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue where the people converged – that deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines.  Indeed, the two authoritarian rulers had a lot in common: they plundered their country and caused extreme misery to the people.
