Young Noynoy’s doctors in 1987, Part I

January 25, 2011
BY ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends…” (John 15:13, the Holy Bible).

                -ooo-

YOUNG NOYNOY AMBUSHED IN 1987: Filipinos now know that when military rebels staged an armed uprising in 1987 against the government of President Corazon Aquino, her only son, Noynoy, the President of the Republic now, was ambushed and seriously wounded by enemy fire as he was on his way to Malacanang at the height of the skirmishes.

But not many know that President Noynoy’s life, after that daring ambush, was saved by a team of three doctors who were then reserved medical officers of the Presidential Security Group under the command then of Col. Voltaire Gazmin, now the current Secretary of the Department of National Defense.

One of the three doctors is now dead, but one of them, Dr. Alex Abelardo S. Fider, is still alive and still practicing medicine in the United States. Dr. Fider, a fraternity brod of mine from the UP Sigma Rho Fraternity, could still vividly recall how the young Noynoy was operated on, and ultimately treated of his ambush wounds.

                    -ooo-

YOUNG NOYNOY SAVED BY HIS SECURITY DETAIL: For whatever it is worth, here is Dr. Fider’s account, sent to me via email: “I was a member of the triad that operated on Noynoy Aquino's ambush gunshot wounds (neck, shoulder and body) by the rebel RAM forces during the failed coup d'etat in 1987.

“Noynoy Aquino's life was saved by his six security details by piling (themselves) one on top of each other to shield Noynoy Aquino from the barrage of gunfire. He played possum until everything was quiet and safe to flee to the PSG side.

“We have brods (RhoSigs) in the government, Malacanang, Congress and Judiciary. I never realized that our patient would be the President of the Philippines now. I am now a United States citizen but I could not forget being a Filipino also. I believe that our lives are in accordance with God's will.

                -ooo-

UNSUNG HEROES: “I am just honored to be a part of our President's life to guide and lead our country. The head of the medical/surgical team was Major Merlin Cipriano, deceased, a much respected general surgeon; Captain Antonio Acosta, Jr., one of the best spinal surgeons and yours truly, Captain Alex Fider, orthopedic surgeon.

“We were all reserve medical officers then as Col. Voltaire Gazmin, Commanding Officer of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) of the late President Corazon Aquino, ordered a news blackout as he was not sure who the active regular officers were on their side or who were on the other side.

“We have served the PSG without any remuneration or award. Dr. Cipriano died without the fanfare of a celebrity. We were the unsung heroes and non-opportunistic people as we have our career and calling.…” More of this in the next issue.

Duktor ng batang Noynoy noong 1987, Part I

MEDITATIONS

January 24, 2011
By: Bobot Apit

Jan 24, 2011 - Monday Meditation (Dead to GOD?)
What is the unforgivable sin which Jesus warns us to avoid? Blasphemy consists in uttering against God, inwardly or outwardly, words of hatred, reproach, or defiance. To fear such a state of sin and spiritual blindness, however, signals that one is not dead to God and is conscious of the need for God's grace, mercy, and help. There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who refuses to acknowledge and confess their sins and...

PUNCH YOUR WAY TO NEW YEAR

by Dido,   Jan 17, 2011

There is no question that the best New Year’s wish is for good health.  Wealth, prosperity and success are meaningless unless you have your health.  There are very few things in life that money cannot buy.  Two of them are love and health.   A wise-guy friend of mine said, “I will wish you the best of all wishes and that is HAPPINESS”.  When I thought about it,happiness is a state of mind which is a product of what must ...
