Rotary District 3810 sets 25th year sportsfest for youth

To commemorate its 25th year of continuously holding a sports contest for the youth under its jurisdiction, District 3810 of Rotary International (RI) under Global Gov. Tranquil Gervacio Salvador III is holding the “Rotaract/Interact” Sportsfest 2011 on February 6, 2011 at the Philippine Sports Commission ULTRA track and field oval.

In a press statement, Senior Deputy Governor Karen Tamayo, the public relations chair of District 3810, said the sportsfest will be conducted under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of University District Manila, led by its Global President Rosalina Co.

“Unlike in previous years, this Sportsfest will spell a very big difference for it will show and present new sports events, including  group events and fun games other than individual games. A Special Cheerleading presentation will be also  be added to highlight celebration of its 25th Anniversary,” President Co said.

The final list of events during the sportsfest, for the morning session, includes: 8 x 50m relay (mixed); sack race relay; 4 x 100m relay (male/female); tug of war (preliminary elimination, semi-final elimination, and final contest); sipa sa mangis; patintero; group jumping rope; obstacle course; threading, jumping rope, planting straw, tumbang preso, and puzzle.

The afternoon session, after lunch, will be allotted to a cheering competition, then to the awarding and closing ceremonies. Senior Deputy Gov. Karen Tamayo said cash prizes and trophies await the winners.

A Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored organization of persons whose ages range from 18 to 30, while an Interact is likewise a Rotary-sponsored organization of children who are between the ages of 12 to 18.

RI District 3810 is composed of Rotary Clubs from Manila, Pasay City, Cavite and Occidental Mindoro.

Gov. Salvador said there are two objectives for the yearly sports festival: to strengthen fellowship, camaraderie, goodwill, and good health among the youth and their adult counterparts, and to discover and enhance Rotaractors and Interactors capabilites in the field of sports and involve them in social actions as an essential ingredient of quality leadership and sportsmanship.

Coordinating the activites with the Rotary Club of University District are Past President Wilson Lei Yee and Rotarian Rene M. Navarro, the chairmen of District 3810’s District Youth Olympics.
