Youth Leadership Summit held at NOLCOM AFP
By Jason de Asis

CAMP AQUINO, Tarlac City, Febuary 2, 2011-With the theme “Youth of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow” a three (3) day Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) was participated by seventy one (71) youths composed of military dependents and Sangguniang Kabataan members of Barangay San Miguel in this city led by the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) from January 28 to 30.

Colonel Gerard V. Velez, Civil-Military Operations Chief said that the activity came in reality through the help of the NOLCOM Commander Lieutenant General Gaudencio Pangilinan for the purpose of empowering the youths, developing their leadership skills and promoting positive  interpersonal relationship where it’s primary objective is to develop their love of country and prevent them from joining dubious groups or organizations that will only ruin their future.

Velez said that the majority of the participants have no idea what they’re getting into, but after successfully hurdling all the activities and discovering new friends, they only have one thing to say-  “It was a great experience!.”  No wonder, their parents wanted them to be part of YLS Batch 1-2011.

Emmanuel Esteban, 15, “Man-man” to his family and friends is looking forward to another YLS activity, sharing that his father is a soldier and yet he admitted that it’s very different when you get to experience the life in a military camp first-hand in the company of people your age.

“We are happy because our leadership potentials have been developed and realized our positive and negative traits so that it will make us conscious of every action we do,” Esteban said.

Genise Anne Delos Reyes, daughter of San Miguel Barangay Captain Jose Delos Reyes III said that she enjoyed the summit and taught them to become more responsible and aware of what is happening around, adding that they became better persons in knowing themselves more than before and they now understand the value of building  friendship and trusting other people.

Tarlac City Mayor Gelacio “Ace” Manalang lauded the opening of YLS and the NOLCOM AFP for the continuing support to the city government’s programs not only to maintain peace and order but also in preparing the youths to become productive and law-abiding citizens.

“If all the youth under our jurisdiction are law abiding, problems in our community will be minimized, if not totally eradicated,” Manalang said, assuring NOLCOM leadership for his support to future YLS activities.
During the Closing Ceremony,  Tarlac Vice-Governor Pearl Grace Erquiza Pacada challenged the participants to become role models in their communities. She said that they have to share what NOLCOM has given them to others, keeping in mind the principle of paying forward.  And as they become successful in their chosen field of endeavor and grow older, she urged them not to forget their roots as Tarlaqueños and Filipinos.
To instill discipline and teamwork particularly during competitions, the summit was governed by certain house rules designed where each of the six (6) groups have their assigned “kuya” (CMO officer especially trained for this activity) who are supposed to guide them.
Group 1 which has the least number of demerits was declared the overall winner during the Closing Ceremony held at the General Lapuz Grandstand last January 30.  All six groups started with 200 merits each but every offense committed by a member was deducted from their earned points.
The participants were able to experience a little part of military life such as reveille, taps, and boodle fight, among others during the summit.  The static display of the Special Forces and Scout Ranger was also an awesome sight while the film showing concerning the recruitment of PMA cadets drew positive reactions from those aspiring to become part of the premiere military institution in the country. It was reinforced by the success story of former police general Leopoldo Bataoil (PMA Magilas Class ‘76), now a congressman representing the 2nd district of Pangasinan.
The youth also showed great interest in the lectures given by representatives of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Philippine National Police (PNP) as well as the recollection spearheaded by Fr. David,  with a bonfire providing them light in the dark hours of night while reminiscing about their lives.
NOLCOM Spokesman Major Rosendo Armas said other military units within the area of responsibility of NOLCOM will duplicate the activity in their respective units, stressing that the recent YLS training was held inside the NOLCOM AFP. (Jason de Asis)
