UP holds memorial ceremony for victims of Japan earthquake, tsunami and nuclear
accident

The University of the Philippines (UP) will hold a memorial ceremony on April 11
(Monday) for the victims of the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear
accident in Japan.

The event will be held at the Quezon Hall Lobby in UP Diliman, Quezon City from
1:00 to 2:30 pm. A minute of silence will be observed at exactly 1:46 pm
(Manila time) which was the time when the earthquake hit Japan, followed by the
tsunami.

The event commemorates the first month of the tragedy that left more than 27,000
dead or missing. Simultaneous ceremonies will be held on April 11 in Japan and
other parts of the world.

UP President Alfredo Pascual and Director Takeuchi Kiyoshi Takeuchi of the Japan
Information and Cultural Center (JICC) will speak during the ceremony.

Earlier, in his message of sympathy, Pascual expressed confidence that "the
strong collective will and spirit of the Japanese people, and the solidarity of
the international community will help [them] overcome this tragedy.”

A significant number of UP officials, professors and researchers obtained
advanced degrees and received research grants in Japanese universities. The
Japan alumni in UP organized the ceremony to express their sympathy and
solidarity with the Japanese people.
