Former film producer Natalie Palanca has a claim that must be verified: vehicles running on LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, are health hazards and can actually kill drivers and passengers alike. PNoy must go after other tax evaders

PNOY MUST GO AFTER OTHER TAX EVADERS: Filipinos certainly welcome the issuance of warrants of arrest by the Court of Tax Appeals during the last few days against rich and influential persons who fraudulently avoid paying taxes, and many are starting to believe that the government, under President Aquino, is really dead serious in battling corruption.

Many are hoping however that the other big businessmen who are publicly known to be notorious in smuggling activities, those who refuse to pay billions of pesos in taxes yearly, and those who corrupt the high and the mighty in government with oodles of money, would be included in the President Aquino’s anti-graft drive in the days to come.

P1 M REASONS TO KILL RAMGEN? Former Sen. Ramon Revilla Sr.’s grief must now be very tremendous for the brutal death of his son, Ramgen, but a bigger grief is sure to haunt him because his other children, siblings of the full-blood of the victim, are now being charged by the police for his murder in his Paranaque City home.

And while I commend the Paranaque City Philippine National Police for arresting Ramgen’s 18-year old brother, Ramon Joseph, and charging him for Ramgen’s death, the motive being bandied about for the killing---a supposed disagreement about the P1 million monthly allowance from the elder Revilla for Ramgen and his brothers and sisters---seems to me a shallow one.

I mean, P1 million a month for the support of nine brothers and sisters would amount to only about P110,000.00 per person. Certainly, this is no reason to kill one’s brother, and attempt the murder of his girlfriend. I repeat here what I said several columns ago: the police seem to be hiding---or refusing to disclose---something here, and I believe it is something real big.

RAMGEN KILLING: SOMETHING MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE: This is the reason why I agree with the grilling of the Paranaque City police chief carried out by a broadcaster of radio station DZMM of ABS-CBN in the morning of November 2, 2011, ostensibly because the broadcaster also felt that there is something more than meets the eye, as it were, in the Revilla case.

What this “something else” is beyond all of us at the moment, but, I can only agree with the radio host if he felt “shortchanged” with the ease with which the authorities charged Ramgen’s siblings for his killing, especially so, as the broadcaster said, there is no other evidence against the siblings except the malleable testimonies of witnesses who were not even at the crime scene.

DEADLY SIBLING RIVALRIES: The Bible provides us with another case of a deadly sibling rivalry in the story of Cain and Abel. That story tells us that jealousy and greed can be powerful motivations for a brother to kill a brother.

It would seem that man, from the time of Cain and Abel, has not really changed. Man will kill, even his own brothers and sisters, even for the flimsiest of reasons. Oh, really, what a tangled web we weave.

P1 M, DAHILAN UPANG PATAYAIN SI RAMGEN? Malaki ang dalamhati sa ngayon ni dating Sen. Ramon Revilla Sr. dahil sa naging brutal na kamatayan ng kanyang anak na si Ramgen, pero mas malaking pighati ang naghihintay sa kanya sapagkat ang iba pa niyang mga anak na kapatid mismo ni Ramgen ang siyang nakahabla sa ngayon upang papanagutin sa pamamaril at pananaksak kay Ramgen sa bahay nito sa Paranaque City.

At bagamat pinararangalan ko ang Paranaque City Philippine National Police sa pagkaka-aresto nito sa 18-taong kapatid ni Ramgen, si Ramon Joseph, matapos itong masampahan ng kasong murder para sa kamatayan ni Ramgen, tila mababaw para sa akin ang sinasabing motibo sa pagpatay---ang diumano’y di-pagkakaunawaan ni Ramgen at ng kanyang mga kapatid ukol sa P1 milyong buwanang sustento mula sa dating senador.

Kasi naman, ang P1 milyong buwanang suporta para sa siyam na magkakapatid ay nangangahulugan lamang ng halos P110,000.0 para sa bawat isang tao. Sa akin, hindi ito sapat na dahilan upang pumatay ng kapatid, at pagtangkaang patayin naman ang kanyang nobya. Uulitin ko ang sinabi ko na noon dito: tila may itinatago ang pulis sa kasong ito, at naniniwala akong malakihan ito.

RAMGEN KILLING: MAS MALALIM NA DAHILAN: Ito ng dahilan kaya sang-ayon ako sa panggigisang ginawa laban sa Paranaque City police chief ng isang broadcaster ng himpilang DZMM ng ABS-CBN noong umaga ng Nobyembre 2, 2011, lalo na at lumilitaw na parang nararamdaman din ng broadcaster na may mas malalim na dahilan sa kamatayan ni Ramgen.

Kung ano man ang “mas malalim na dahilan” na ito ay di ko pa matukoy, pero sumasang-ayon ako sa radio host kung ang pakiramdam niya ay para bagang nagkaroon ng shortcut sa agarang pagsasampa ng kaso laban sa mga kapatid ni Ramgen, lalo na, ayon sa broadcaster, at wala namang ibang katibayan laban sa mga kapatid na ito kundi ang mga testimonya ng mga testigo na maaaring magbago.

NAKAKAMATAY NA PAG-AAWAY NG MAGKAKAPATID: Maging ang Bibliya ay naglalaman ng mga kuwento ng mga nakakamatay na paglalaban-laban ng mga magkakapatid, at kabilang dito ang kuwento nina Cain at Abel. Ang kuwentong ito ay nagpapakita na napakalaking motibasyon sa pagpatay ng isang kapatid ang selos at pagkagahaman.

Sa aking tingin, hindi na talaga nagbago ang tao, mula pa sa panahon nina Cain at Abel. Papatay at papatay ang tao kahit na ng kanyang mga kapatid, kahit na batay lamang sa mga pinaka-payak na dahilan. Tunay nga, masalimuot masyado ang buhay na sinusuong natin.

ILO warns of wars and famines

BIGGEST MEDIA EVENT IN ASIA: An international media summit to be held in Boracay Island, from December 8 to 10, 2011, touted to be “the biggest media event in Asia” and dubbed as “Boracay Island Global Media Convention”, is seeking to define the role of media in armed conflict, and establish directions in an era of Internet-conscious public, among others.

The three-day event will be attended by some 500 publishers, broadcasters, photojournalists, authors, writers, lifestyle and travel editors, and book publishers from different parts of the world, and is under the auspices of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. ILO WARNS OF WARS AND FAMINES: The International Labor Organization warns of more difficult times ahead, especially for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), as more and more countries, even those traditionally considered as having advanced economies, will be unable to provide even the jobs previously being offered by them to foreign workers.

The reason is that, the ILO said in its World of Work Report 2011, “… nearly two-thirds of advanced economies and half of emerging and developing economies with recent available data were once again experiencing a slowdown in employment…” Where would all of these lead to?

Social unrest or wars and, of course, hunger and famine, said the same ILO report, signed by Raymond Torres, the director of ILO International Institute for Labor Studies. Sounds familiar? Yes, it should, because those are the signs that Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, said would herald the end of the world.

In Matthew 24: 6, 7 and 8 of the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ specifically said: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars… Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains…”

EXACT DATE OF THE END OF THE WORLD: Of course no one knows the exact date of the end: “…`But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father…” (Matthew 24:36), so that we should all be ready for it: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come...” (Matthew 24:42).

But Jesus gives a clear indication of when the end will come: “… Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away…” (Matthew 24:33-35).

ILO, NAGBABALA NG MGA GIYERA AT TAGGUTOM: May babala ang International Labor Organization (ILO): dumarating na ang mas mahirap pang buhay para sa lahat, lalo na para sa mga overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), dahil mas maraming bansa sa ngayon, kasama ang mga dating mayayamang nasyon, ang hindi na makakapagbigay ng mga trabahong dati na nilang ibinigay sa mga manggagawa sa ibang bansa.

Ang dahilan, ayon sa ILO sa kanyang World of Work Report 2011, “… halos dalawa at ikatlong bahagi ng mga bansang mayayaman at kalahati ng mga bansang umaangat pa lamang ang ekonomiya ay nakakaranas na naman ng matinding kawalan ng trabaho at hanapbuhay…” Saan patungo ang lahat ng ito?

Magkakaroon ng taggutom at mga lindol sa maraming lugar. Ang lahat ng ito ay umpisa ng kapighatian…”

EKSAKTONG ARAW NG WAKAS: Oo naman, walang nakakaalam ng eksaktong araw ng wakas: “… `Walang nakakaalam ng araw at oras ng wakas, ni ng mga anghel sa langit, ni ng Anak, kundi ang Ama lamang…” (Mateo 24:36), kaya naman dapat tayong maging handa: “Kung ganun, magmatyag kayo, sapagkat hindi ninyo alam ang araw ng pagdating ng Panginoon…” (Mateo 24:42).

Pero nagbigay si Jesus, ang ating Diyos at Tagapagligtas, ng katiyakan kung kailan darating ang wakas: “…Magkaganunman, kung makikita na ninyo ang lahat ng ito, alam na ninyong malapit na ang wakas, nasa pintuan na ito. Tunay nga, sinasabi ko sa inyo, ang henerasyong ito ay hindi mawawala hanggang hindi nagaganap ang lahat ng ito. Mawawala ang langit at lupa, ngunit hindi mawawala ang aking mga salita…” (Mateo 24:33-35).

Praying and Bible-reading for the dead, II

PRAYING AND BIBLE-READING FOR THE DEAD, PART II: Bob Gabuna, a member of the Internet group “seachlight”, raised interesting points about our column on the Bible’s 1 Peter 3:19 and 1 Peter 4:6, both of which talk about praying and Bible-reading for the dead, so that even if they died as sinners, they will still have a chance to live a life in Paradise with God.

Bob’s first point: “I will have a dilemma how to reconcile the passage recorded in Hebrews 9: 27 that man is `destined to die once and after that to face judgment.’”

My reaction: Yes, man will die once, and after that, he is to face judgment. Ecclesiastes 12:14 of the Bible attests to that. But then, Hebrews 9:27 does not say that after a man dies, he will immediately face judgment---emphasis is on the word “immediately”. There is nothing in Hebrews 9:27 which says that man will “immediately” face judgment.

What is clear, based on 1 Peter 3:19, is that man’s soul will be “imprisoned” first, evidently to await Judgment Day together with all other souls, which judgment day will come with the Second Coming of Jesus, our God and Savior.

BIBLE IS CLEAR AND UNEQUIVOCAL: Bob’s second point: “…Furthermore, in the Old Testament, the Scripture decreed it that is an abomination to communicate with the dead…” My reaction: that maybe true, but then, 1 Peter 3:19 clearly shows that Jesus not only communicated with the dead, but He even went to them and preached the Gospel to them. Clearly, if there was an Old Testament rule, Jesus changed it.

Bob’s third point: “… The eternal destiny of the dead person was already determined while he or she is still alive…” My reaction: that is the view of those who have not read 1 Peter 3:19 and 4:6 yet. With 1 Peter 3:19 and 4:6, the eternal destiny of the dead person can still be changed, as Jesus showed when He went to the “imprisoned souls”, and as emphatically proved by 1 Peter 4:6

Otherwise, the Bible would not have put in 1 Peter 3:19 and 4:6 anymore. Now, if the Bible itself is saying that we must pray and read (or recite) the Bible for the dead, what is our authority for saying otherwise? Are we not desecrating the Bible by saying we should not believe it?

1 PETER 3:19 AND 1 PETER 4:6: For the benefit of those who are reading this for the first time, here is 1 Peter 3:19 once more: “For Christ… was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. Panalangin, pagbabasa ng Bibliya sa mga patay, II

INSPIRASYON SA BUHAY: “… Sapagkat naligtas kayo sa pamamagitan ng biyaya, dahil sa inyong pananampalataya---ito ay hindi nagmumula sa inyo, kundi isang pagpapala ng Diyos---hindi ng inyong mga gawa, upang walang maipagmalaki ang sinuman…” (Efeso 2:8-9, Bibliya).

PANALANGIN AT PAGBABASA NG BIBLIYA PARA SA MGA PATAY, PART II: May mga interesanteng reaksiyon si Bob Gabuna, isang kasapi ng Internet group na “searchlight”, sa ating kolum sa 1 Pedro 3:19 at 1 Pedro 4:6 ng Bibliya, kung saan isinusulong ng mga ito ang mga panalangin at pagbabasa ng Bibliya para sa mga patay na, upang kahit na namatay silang makasalanan, maaari pa rin silang makasama ng Diyos sa langit o Paraiso.

Unang punto ni Bob: “Mahihirapan akong papag-isahin ang nakasulat sa Hebreo 9:27 na nagsasabing `ang tao ay minsan lamang mamamatay at pagkatapos noon ay haharap na sa paghuhukom’.”

Ang aking sagot: Oo, minsan lamang mamamatay ang tao at pagkatapos, haharap na siya sa paghuhukom. Ito ang sinasabi ng Ecclesiastes (o Mangangaral) 12:14 ng Bibliya. Pero, hindi naman sinasabi ng Hebreo 9:27 na matapos mamatay ang tao, haharap na siya agad sa paghuhukom. Walang bahagi ang Hebreo 9:27 na nagsasabing “agad” na haharap ang tao sa paghuhukom.

Ang maliwanag, batay sa 1 Pedro 3:19, ang kaluluwa ng tao ay “ikukulong” muna, upang maghintay ng Araw ng Paghuhukom kasama ang lahat ng kaluluwa, na magaganap sa Muling Pagbabalik ni Jesus, ang ating Diyos at Tagapagligtas.

MALIWANAG ANG BIBLIYA: Pangalawang punto ni Bob: “… Ganundin, sa Lumang Tipan, sinasabi na kasuklam-suklam ang pakikipag-komunikasyon sa mga patay…” Ang reaksiyon ko: maaaring totoo yan, pero, maliwanag sa 1 Pedro 3:19 na hindi lamang nakipag-komunikasyon si Jesus sa mga patay, pinuntahan pa Niya ang mga ito at pinangaralan ng Mabuting Balita. Kung may utos man sa Lumang Tipan, binago na ito ni Jesus.

Pangatlong punto ni Bob: “… Ang buhay na walang hanggan ng isang patay na ay naitakda noong nabubuhay pa siya…” Reaksiyon ko: iyan ang pananaw ng mga di pa nakakabasa ng 1 Pedro 3:19 at 4:6. Sa mga bahaging ito ng Bibliya, maliwanag na maaari pang baguhin ang buhay na walang hanggang ng isang patay na, gaya ng ipinakita ni Jesus sa mga “nakabilanggong mga kaluluwa”.

Kung hindi ganun ang layunin, sana ay di na isinama pa sa Bibliya ang 1 Pedro 3:19 at 4:6. Ngayon, kung sinabi mismo ng Bibliya na dapat ipanalangin at basahan (o pangaralan) ng Bibliya ang mga patay, bakit naman natin ito tututulan? Hindi ba natin winawalanghiya ang Bibliya kung hindi natin paniniwalaan ang mga nakasaad doon?

1 PEDRO 3:19 AT 1 PEDRO 4:6: Naririto pong muli ang 1 Pedro 3:19, sa mga hindi pa nakababasa: “Sapagkat si Kristo ay namatay sa laman pero nabuhay sa Espiritu. FILIPINOS NEED MORE THAN PRAYING: It is nice to see President Aquino encouraging Filipinos to pray harder during these troubled times, but then we need more than prayers now, in much the same way that, as the Bible said in James 2:17 and 2:26, we need something more than faith to receive God’s grace, blessings, security and guidance.

This “something more” is faith coupled with acts, for a faith without acts is dead. So then, for Christian believers and for all others wishing to find a solution to our problems, what kind of acts must we do? First, of course, is accepting Jesus as God and Savior (John 1:12, John 10:30, 1 Timothy 1:15 of the Bible, among others).

Then, we must listen to God (which means to say, read His Bible) and obey Him unconditionally, truthfully and sincerely (Deuteronomy 28:1, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Matthew 6:33 and Matthew 7:24-27 of the Bible, among others). Reactions? Call me at 0917 984 24 68 or email me at batasmauricio@yahoo.com.

TAG ON MINDANAO CAMPAIGN IRRELEVANT: I guess that a dog by any other name is still a dog, and so, whether the offensive in Mindanao is to be called an “all out war” or an “all out justice” is not really important. What is important is that, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the entire Aquino government were caught with their pants down in the killing of 19 officers and men in Al-Barka, Basilan.

It does not matter, too, that the AFP has now cleared Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay of rebels and rouge elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. What is important is that Mindanao remains a stronghold of secessionists, bandits, media-killers, and other vultures, and that even the Aquino government has not found a solution to push the region to development.

NO POLICE CLUES ON REVILLA KILLING? I find it odd that, for a personality as big as the half-brother of Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr., police couldn’t offer at least a theory as to why 23 year old Ramgen Jose Bautista and his girlfriend would be shot at, stabbed and, for Ram, killed. Yet, Ram’s sister, Maria Ramona Belen, was spared. I suspect the police are hiding something in this case, and it must be something big.

LIGOTS NOW OUT OF THE COUNTRY? Can we really believe that former AFP comptroller Gen. Jacinto Ligot and his wife, Erlinda, are still in the Philippines, and are just merely hiding somewhere? I believe that they are now out of the country, taking advantage of the lull in their case and slipping out unnoticed, knowing as they did that the heat will be on them, as it is happening now.

DEBATES ABOUT GOD WITH NON-BELIEVERS USELESS: There is a Facebook group where my name and Facebook account were simply added without my consent, and where the members are engaged in deep debates about almost anything about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Initially, I was participating in their discussions, but then it became clear to me that many of the members were adamant in their lack of belief.

Here is what the Bible, in its Matthew 7:6, says about discussing with them: “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces…”

HIGIT PA SA PANALANGIN, KAILANGAN NG PINOY: Mabuti naman at hinihikayat ng Pangulong Aquino ang mga Pilipinong manalangin ng totohanan sa mga panahong ito, pero higit na sa panalangin ang kailangan natin ngayon, gaya na rin ng sinasabi ng Bibliya sa Santiago 2:17 at 2:26 na kailangan natin ang higit pa sa pananampalataya upang tanggapin ang biyaya at pagpapala, paggabay at proteksiyon ng Diyos.

Ang “higit pa sa pananampalataya” na kailangan natin ay ang mga gawa o kilos ng isang mananampalataya, sapagkat ang pananampalatayang walang kasamang gawa ay patay. Kaya naman, ano ang dapat nating ikilos o gawin? Una, siyempre, ay ang pagtanggap kay Jesus bilang Diyos at Tagapagligtas (Juan 1:12, Juan 10:30, 1 Timoteo 1:15 ng Bibliya).

DEBATE UKOL SA DIYOS SA MGA DI NANINIWALA, SAYANG LANG: Mayroong isang Facebook group kung saan ang aking pangalan at Facebook account ay basta na na lamang nila idinagdag upang maging miyembro nila, gayong wala naman akong pahintulot. Sa grupong ito, nakikisama ako noon sa mga talakayan nila ukol sa Diyos, pero tinigilan ko na ng lumaon, lalo na at nakita kong wala naman talaga silang paniniwala sa Diyos.

Naririto ang sinasabi ng Bibliya, sa kanyang Mateo 7:6, ukol sa pakikipagdiskusyon sa mga di nananampalataya: “Huwag mong ibibigay sa mga aso ang anumang bagay na sagrado at banal; huwag mong itatapon ang iyong mga perlas sa mga baboy. Kung magkakagayon, tatapakan lamang nila ang mga ito, at ikaw naman ang kanilang dudurugin…”

Praying and Bible reading for the dead

RESURRECTION OF JESUS, AS FIRST GLORIOUS MYSTERY: After the “Sorrowful Mysteries”, the “Glorious Mysteries” in the Holy Rosary of the Roman Catholic Christians follow. The “Glorious Mysteries” constitute the last batch of the mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

The first of the so called “Glorious Mysteries” is the “Resurrection of Jesus”, and long accounts of it are contained in Matthew 28:1 to 20, Mark 16:1 to 20, Luke 24:1 to53, and John 20 and 21.

All of these Gospels say that Mary Magdalene and another woman went to the place where Jesus was entombed, after his crucifixion and death, and found that His body was no longer there.

JESUS IS RISEN: Then, an angel of the Lord appeared, and told the women that Jesus has risen, as He prophesied about Himself, and was in fact going to Galilee, to meet His disciples.

Shortly after this and in many other incidents thereafter, Jesus showed Himself to His disciples, allowing them to touch His wounds, even eating with them, and, finally, giving them the Great Commission: to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus likewise ordered His disciples to teach the nations to obey everything that He taught and commanded the disciples, assuring them that He will be with them, to the very end of the age.

PRAYING AND READING THE BIBLE FOR THE DEAD: Here are two Biblical verses, both taken from 1 Peter of the Bible, which prove that dead people can still be the object of prayer and Scriptural readings, so that even if they died in sin, they could still have eternal life in God.

“For Christ… was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits---to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built…” (1 Peter 3:19).

Panalangin, pagbabasa ng Bibliya para sa mga patay

INSPIRASYON SA BUHAY: “… Kung ganun, hinihimok ko kayo mga kapatid, sa harap ng awa ng Diyos, na ialay ninyo ang inyong mga katawan bilang mga buhay na handog, banal at kasiya-siya sa Diyos---ito ang inyong tunay at tamang pagsamba…” (Roma 12:1, Bibliya).

MULING PAGKABUHAY NI JESUS, UNANG MISTERYO SA LUWALHATI: Matapos ang mga “Misteryo sa Hapis”, ang mga “Misterio sa Luwalhati” naman ang kasunod sa Banal na Rosaryo ng mga Kristiyanong Romano Katoliko. Ang mga “Misteryo sa Luwalhati” ay siyang mga pinakahuling misteryo ng Banal na Rosaryo.

Ang una sa mga “Misteryo sa Luwalhati” ay ang tinaguriang “Muling Pagkabuhay ni Jesus”, na ang kuwento ay makikita sa Mateo 28:1 hanggang 20, Marcos 16:1 hanggang 20, Lucas 24:1 hanggang 53, at Juan 20 at 21.

Ang lahat ng mga kuwentong ito ay nagsasabing tumungo si Maria Magdalena at ang isa pang babae sa lugar kung saan inilibing si Jesus matapos ang Kanyang pagkakapako sa krus at kamatayan, at nakita nilang wala na ang Kanyang katawan.

JESUS, NABUHAY NA MULI: Noon din ay may lumitaw na anghel ng Diyos, at sinabihan sila na si Jesus ay muling nabuhay, katulad ng Kanyang ipinangaral, at Siya ay tutungo sa Galilea upang makipagkita sa Kanyang mga disipulo at mga tagasunod.

Pagkatapos noon, nagpakita si Jesus sa Kanyang mga alagad, na pinayagan Niyang humawak sa Kanyang mga sugat, kumain kasama sila, at binigyan niya ng katungkulang tumungo sila sa lahat ng mga bansa, at binyagan sila sa ngalan ng Ama, ng Anak at ng Espiritu Santo.

Inutusan din ni Jesus ang Kanyang mga disipulo na turuan ang lahat ng mga bansa na sumunod sa Kanyang mga ipinangaral, kasama ng pangakong magiging kasama nila Siya hanggang sa dulo ng panahon.

MGA PATAY, PUWEDE PANG IPANALANGIN AT BASAHAN NG BIBLIYA: Naririto po ang dalawang bahagi ng Bibliya, mula sa 1 Pedro, na nagpapatunay na ang mga taong namatay na ay maaari pa ring maipanalangin at basahan ng mga Kasulatan, upang kahit sila ay namatay sa kasalanan, mabubuhay pa rin sila ng walang hanggan, kasama ang Diyos.

“Sapagkat si Kristo… ay namatay sa laman subalit muling nabuhay sa Espiritu. Matapos siyang buhaying muli, tinungo Niya ang mga nakakulong na mga kaluluwa at nagpahayag sa kanila---sa mga kaluluwang hindi sumuno sa Diyos noong matiyaga Siyang naghintay sa panahon ni Noa habang ginagawa nito ang daong…” (1 Pedro 3:19).

“Sapagkat ito ang dahilan kung saan ang ebanghelyo ay ipinangaral maging ddon sa mga patay na, upang sa kanilang paghuhukom ay tutuusin sila ayon sa batayang pang-tao ukol sa katawan, subalit mamumuhay sila sa espiritu sa harapan ng Diyos…” (1 Pedro 4:6).

INC’s Eduardo V. Manalo: God-directed

PERSON TO PERSON MENTORING FOR INC EXECUTIVE MINISTER: As Iglesia Ni Cristo Executive Minister Eduardo V. Manalo celebrates his 56th birthday on October 31, 2011, he will actually be marking likewise the second successful year of his leadership of the Church founded in 1914 by his grandfather, Executive Minister Felix Y. Manalo, and subsequently nurtured to greatness by his own father, Executive Minister Erano G. Manalo.

But, while God’s hand can be seen directing the steps of Ka Eduardo as he became the third leader of the Church in 2009, thus continuing its phenomenal evangelization success not only in the Philippines but even worldwide, it helped greatly that, for a long time, he underwent a “person to person” mentoring from his father, Ka Erdy, evidently preparing him for his present position.

INC records show that Ka Erdy took every opportunity to teach Ka Eduardo, so that even simple moments like taking a brisk walk would turn into precious mentoring sessions.

And the advice and guidance of Ka Erdy became extremely important to Ka Eduardo, especially after Ka Eduardo was named as the Church’s deputy executive minister on May 7, 1994, such that communication lines remained open between the father and the son, even when they are hundreds of miles apart.

INSPIRASYON SA BUHAY: “… Sapagkat ang salita ng Diyos ay buhay at kumikilos. Mas matalas sa dalawang talim ng isang tabak, at nakakapasok sa paghihiwalay ng kaluluwa at ng espiritu at ng mga buto at kasu-kasuan; tinutuos nito ang isip at pag-uugali ng puso…” (Hebreo 4:14, Bibliya).

PERSONAL NA PAGTUTURO PARA SA TAGAPAMAHALANG PANGKALAHATAN NG INC: Habang ipinagdiriwang ni G. Eduardo V. Manalo, ang Tagapamahalang Pangkalahatan ng Iglesia Ni Cristo, ang kanyang ika-56 na kaarawan sa Oktubre 31, 2011, itinatampok din ang kanyang ikalawang-taon ng matagumpay na pamumuno sa Simbahang itinatag noong 1914 ng kanyang lolo, si Executive Minister Felix Y. Batay sa mga record ng INC, sinamantala ni Ka Erdy ang bawat pagkakataon upang sanayin ng lubos si Ka Eduardo, kaya naman kahit na ang mga simpleng pagsasama lamang nila, gaya ng paglalakad upang mag-ehersisyo, ay naging daan ng mga mahahalagang pagtuturo.

Dahil diyan, naging napakahalaga ng mga payo at paggabay ni Ka Erdy para kay Ka Eduardo, lalo na noong manombrahan si Ka Eduardo bilang Pangalawang Tagapamahalang Pangkalahatan ng Iglesia noong Mayo 7, 1994, kaya naman nanatiling nakabukas ang linya ng komunikasyon sa kanilang pagitan, kahit na libong milya ang layo nila sa isa’t isa.

Manila inmates decry slow trial

WHERE IS WANING? Ok, the AFP has taken over a supposed encampment of around 100 outlaws led by Waning Abdusalam of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay. But where is Waning? And where are his trusted lieutenants? They were able to escape the military dragnet once again?

MONITORING HOW P5 M DONATION TO MILF WAS SPENT: Assuming the MILF will submit a report on how it spent the P5 million which the Aquino government donated to it, is there a way by which Malacanang can countercheck if the report is true, and verify that this huge amount was not spent in buying the guns and bullets that were used to kill the 19 officers and men of the AFP in Al-Barka, Basilan?

CITY JAIL LECTURE ENDS UP WITH A BIBLE STUDY AND PRAYER: Last October 26, 2011, I got a chance to go inside the Manila City Jail in Sta. Cruz, Manila because I was brought there by Dr. Art Platon, a past president of the Rotary Club of Intramuros, upon the invitation of the Caritas, Tondo, Manila, a socio-civic organization whose members are helping jail inmates one way or another.

If you are not used to visiting places like the Manila City Jail, it would be kind of creepy the first time, because as you pass through its gates which are immediately closed behind you, and as you pass by rows and rows of tattoed inmates, you will be invaded by thoughts like, what if a riot would erupt, where would you go or hide?

Anyway, after waiting for about 30 minutes for inmates to come to the place where we were supposed to talk to them, a group of about 20 or so detention prisoners came, prompting us to proceed with our lecture.

INMATES DECRY SLOW TRIAL: Wow! It was a devastating experience, because many of those who were present were all complaining about how slow their cases were moving, so that even if their complainants were no longer attending hearings and have displayed disinterest par excellence, they continue to be detained for as much as 10 years already!

While I promised to do something to help, as much as I can, I told them that there was only One who could really help them, and it is the greatest lawyer and judge of all time, God Almighty.

To me, that was the highlight of this visit, because I hammered in on them that even if they got nothing from me that afternoon about their immediate release from detention or about their other concerns, they would be winners through and through if they will always remember that God is good---and just---all the time, and that if only they would seek God all the time, His goodness will come upon them without fail.

Was I glad when, in response to that spiel, the prisoners chorused, “Amen”!

CITY JAIL LECTURE, MAY KASAMANG BIBLE STUDY AT PANALANGIN: Noong Oktubre 26, 2011, nakapasok ako sa Manila City Jail sa Sta. Cruz, Manila matapos akong dalhin doon ni Dr. Art Platon, isang past president ng Rotary Club of Intramuros, ayon sa paanyaya ng Caritas, Tondo, Manila, isang organisasyong tumutulong sa mga nakakulong.

Magkaganunman, matapos kaming maghintay ng halos 30 minuto sa mga detinido upang makausap namin sila, dumating ang halos 20 katao, at doon na nag-umpisa ang aming lecture.

MABAGAL NA PAG-USAD NG KASO, INIULAT: Wow! Tunay namang nakakayanig ang karanasang ito, sapagkat marami sa mga nakakulong doon ay nagrereklamo na ang kanilang mga kaso ay napakabagal ang kilos, kaya naman kahit di na sumisipot sa mga hearing ang kanilang mga complainants at nagpakitang wala na silang interest, nagpapatuloy pa rin ang kulong ng mga akusado.

Bagamat nangako akong tutulong sa kanila upang remedyuhan ang suliraning ito, sa abot ng aking makakaya, sinabihan ko silang iisa lang talaga ang makakatulong sa kanila, at siya ay ang pinakamahusay na abogado at hukom sa lahat, at ito ang Diyos na Makapangyarihan.

Sa ganang akin, ito ang naging tampok ng aking pagbisita doon, sapagkat ipinukpok ko sa kanila na bagamat wala man silang nakuha mula sa akin ukol sa kanilang agarang paglabas o iba pang naisin, ituturing pa ding nanalo sila ng lubos kung aalalahanin nila sa lahat ng sandali na mabuti ang Diyos---at makatarungan--- at kung hahanapin lamang nila ang Diyos, darating ang Kanyang pagpapala.

Ang laking tuwa ang sumapuso ko ng sumagot silang lahat ng “Amen”!

WHY IS THE MILITARY AVOIDING BASILAN? The barber regularly cutting my hair from UP Diliman, Quezon City, has a pungent question on the on-going military bombardment of Zamboanga Sibugay to flush out lawless groups which, loosely translated, says: “It appears that the military really has the capacity to bomb the rebels in the first place, why did they have to wait for the 19 soldiers of the AFP to be killed first?”

The driver of the law office where I work, a former policeman, also has a question, which echoes our column the other day: “why is the military pulverizing Zamboanga Sibugay, and not Basilan? Were not the 19 soldiers killed in Basilan? Why is the military avoiding Basilan?”

BOYBANTING, NEMESIS OF THIEVES: Ernesto Boybanting, a member of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), must be promoted several ranks higher, for bravery in line of duty after he singlehandedly engaged and killed two of five robbers who victimized a 24-hour convenience store in Bgy. Holy Spirit, Quezon City, Monday night (October 24, 2011).

I know human rights groups will howl with what I am going to say, but I believe that we need more Boybantings to kill criminals who are becoming bolder and bolder each day, who have no qualms of killing their own victims, too, just so they can get away with their thievery.

BANK COLLECTOR KILLED BY ROBBERS: Ariel Ubagan, 29, of Manticao, Misamis Oriental, is another hapless victim of heartless robbers. Refusing to handover his collections for an Iligan City bank amounting to P500,000 to two motorcycle-riding hooded robbers, Ubagan was shot in the face and died Monday, October 24, 2011. I am sure his relatives are wishing that Boybanting was there to help him during the robbery.

Sigurado akong ninais ng mga kamag-anak ni Ubagan na nandoon sana noon si Boybanting, upang nalabanan ang mga kriminal.

WHY ARE THE BOMBS FALLING IN ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY AND NOT BASILAN? And so, the Philippine Air Force and the Armed Forces of the Philippines are now dropping bombs to pulverize a suspected hideout of a breakaway faction of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in a remote village in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay. But then, why Zamboanga Sibugay? Were not the 19 soldiers killed in Basilan?

DYNAMICS ON THE P10 B AFP FUND: Military authorities should not be on the defensive in explaining the recent release of some P10 billion to the AFP for its modernization program. What is important is that, the fund could now be used to procure better military equipment to improve the AFP’s firepower, and make it more fearsome on the part of the enemies of the State.

It is just unfortunate, of course, that before the fund could be released, 19 officers and men of the Armed Forces had to sacrifice their lives first! Which leads some people to think: if the 19 soldiers were not killed, would the P10 billion fund have been released at all?

SUPERPOWERS IN THE MINDANAO WAR? Some of my friends are telling me that some superpowers interested in Mindanao maybe behind the criminal elements operating in the area, and are the ones actually preventing the Aquino government from resorting to an all-our war in the South.

I have also been told that if this all-out war is launched, it could mean the end of President Aquino’s presidency, in much the same way that the Estrada presidency was ended after his much-publicized all-our war against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Anyone care to comment on this?

MIKE A IS STILL RESPONDENT IN POLL FRAUD RAPS: Is the Department of Justice bound by the findings of a fact-finding panel that former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo had nothing to do with the fraud which allegedly attended the 2007 elections? The answer is yes, it is, especially because Justice Secretary Leila De Lima already upheld those findings.

But then, those finding certainly do not bind Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, who has a pending complaint against Mike. Mike therefore is still a respondent in that case, and even if he cries to high heavens now, there is nothing he can do except to defend himself in the on-going preliminary investigation being conducted by the DOJ.

GEN. LIM’S WARNING VS. COUPS: I really don’t know if the warning of Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, now a deputy customs commissioner, against coup d’etats will be taken seriously by the military. Per official historical record, Lim was always at the forefront of efforts to fight previous governments. Perhaps, his new position has changed his perspectives?

Pero, bakit Zamboanga Sibugay? Hindi ba sa Basilan pinatay ang 19 na sundalo ng AFP?

MGA ISYU SA P10 B AFP FUND: Hindi dapat defensive ang mga autoridad ng militar sa pagpapaliwanag nila ng pagkakapalabas ng P10 bilyong pondo para sa modernization program ng AFP. Ang mahalaga, magagamit na ang malaking perang ito para makabili ng mas mahusay na gamit ang militar at maging mas malakas ang AFP upang lalo itong katatakutan ng mga kalaban ng Estado.

Nakakalungkot nga lamang, siyempre, na bago naipalabas ang pondo, kinailangan munang magbuwis ng buhay ang 19 na sundalo at mga opisyales ng Armed Forces! Daan upang mag-isip tuloy ang ilan: kung hindi ba napatay ang 19 na ito, maipapalabas kaya ang P10 bilyon para sa AFP?

SUPERPOWERS SA GIYERA SA MINDANAO? Ilan sa aking mga kaibigan ang nagsasabi sa akin na ilang superpowers na may interest sa Mindanao ang maaaring nasa likod ng mga elementong kriminal sa lugar, at maaaring siyang pumipigil sa gobyernong Aquino upang maglunsad ng isang “all-out” war sa Hilagang Pilipinas.

Nasabihan din ako na kung maglulunsad nga ng giyera ang Pangulo, mangangahulugan ito ng katapusan ng gobyernong Aquino, kagaya din diumano sa naging katapusan ng administrasyong Estrada matapos niyang inilunsad ang todong giyera laban sa Moro Islamic Liberation Front. May nais bang magbigay ng komento sa isyung ito?
